ASSESSMENT ADMIN MONITORING SYSTEM

My role

I led the design efforts from the start until the end of development of the product. I worked closely with one of our UX Researchers with whom we led the process and transition from design to development. My responsibility was  also ensuring the implementation meets the client’s expectation from approved design mockups. I worked closely with the project manager, three business analysts, a group of ten developers and three QC members. I participated in numerous requirements, interaction design and IA design brainstorming sessions as well as UI visual design presentations to the internal team.

Project overview

The overall goal was to redesign existing application that is being used for monitoring assessments being performed on multiple training tablets. The purpose of this application is to let test administrators manage student participation and data, and monitor student progress and laptop battery health using an assessment management tool designed and developed by us. The client conducts assessments every year on millions of students across the US. The stakes for this system are very high. Even a single student data loss is considered as a failure. Some of the end users of this applications are not tech-savvy and one of the requirements was to accommodate the design decisions around it.

Final application design:

This was a redesign effort based on previously built application (designed and developed more than five years prior). A lot of negative feedback for the initial software as far as ease of use and the high expectations from the client put us to the task to provide a simple, intuitive and elegant solution. Due to some requirements changes, the time allocated for design was cut in half.
Analyzing the old system’s interface, content, interactions and navigaiton and based on users feedback, my main goal was to design a system that not only functions, but to make people happy and satisfied while using it.

Users and goals

Through stakeholder interviews, it was concluded that there was only one user type utilizing the application – administrators who monitor student assessments. The ultimate goal for every user is to receive accurate, real – time information about the assessments status, changes, help requests and any factors that directly have impact on the assessments. Last, but not least, it was important for every user to ensure that proper and stable connection between assessed tablets was present at all times and appropriate indication for connectivity was provided.

Conceptual design & wireframes

One of our UX researchers performed the usability study and analysis of the initial system and gathered most business and technical requirements. He provided all data results and we started the design process from the ground up using his wireframes as a starting point. Due to time constrains, he was unable to wireframe all pages and menus, which is why this fell on my plate in the form of mockups. That was one stone, two birds type of method, not the most efficient one but we had to be flexible considering the tight schedule.

Design Brainstorming and Design Mockups

We used the wireframes and usability study document as a base point for our design discussions. Eventually the interactions for many pages changed based on my recommendations for simpler solutions. Due to a very tight deadline we were unable to revise the wireframes, instead the final design intend and interactions were addressed on the high fidelity design mockups.

Achievements and Recognition Awards

Despite of the extremely tight deadline and implementation roadblocks , the highest award was given to the UX team members that worked on flushing out the redesign of this application- the clients were completely satisfied and impressed with the new system!!! My colleague, the UX researcher and I received Certificates of Recognition for redesigning this app and enjoyed the clients and end users (as well as upper management and other staff in our company) compliments while final user testing! As always, the biggest award we could receive was the satisfaction of using the freshly redesigned product by the many end users and the client!
